WHAT AGE CAN MY NEWBORN BE PHOTOGRAPHED?
Newborn babies only stay little for a short period of time, making this stage even more precious. They experience slight changes each week, so there is always something special to capture. That is why we chose to offer our sessions up to one month of age.
Other photographers may limit the age, as some poses are better when they are flexible and sleepy. However, babies older than 2 weeks just need a little more patience and will look equally as adorable, even if there are some curly poses we might not get.
HOW LONG IS THE SESSION?
Our Newborn photoshoots are not time-based as we want the session to be comfortable and relaxing. Babies are also unpredictable in their eating, sleeping, and nappy schedule, so we have to be accommodating.
WHERE DO YOU SHOOT?
We offer our Newborn Photography sessions in your home, or our studio in Surrey Hills, Melbourne, which is close to Camberwell, Box Hill, and Burwood.
There are some cultures, like mine, that practice postpartum confinement. Therefore, we want to be as convenient as possible and bring the photoshoot to you. If we hold the session at your home, there is no need to clean up as we shoot a lot of close up portraits, but an empty clean wall or background would be best for wide family shots.
IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO PREPARE?
To achieve adorable sleepy poses, try to keep your newborn awake 1-2 hours before the session and only feed once we have arrived at your home. We need a short while to set up the bean bag and lighting equipment. If you are coming to our studio, you're welcome to feed here so we can jump straight into the photoshoot.
Please loosen up your baby's clothing and nappy shortly before the session. Avoid anything too tight, such as socks or elastic bands that leave marks, or any tops that need to be pulled over the head that might disrupt their sleep. Your baby will be naked most of the time, so we will turn on a heater.
ARE FAMILY PHOTOS INCLUDED?
Yes, our Newborn package includes immediate Family Photography. The session will start with solo newborn shots as they have just been fully fed and in a "milk drunk" state, then we will slowly include parents and siblings in.
Also, I have found that photos turn out best if parents and siblings are dressed in simple neutral clothes. Any solid t-shirt without a big logo or a casual outfit without a striking pattern will look great.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PHOTOSHOOT?
The week following your photoshoot, I will send you a sneak peek photo for you to send to family and friends, or simply to announce on social media. If you do upload online, please tag me @themomentsbymelissa.
Your remaining images will be ready to download within three weeks. I edit each image individually through Lightroom and Photoshop to remove any acne or dry skin whilst maintaining a natural and flawless final product. You will receive a minimum of 15 images, but I will give as many as possible. Read more information about this in our Final Images FAQs.
HOW DO I BOOK?
Please contact me while you are still pregnant so I can temporarily hold times for you around your due date. Once your baby is born, we can organise an exact day and time.
If you have any other questions, please get in touch using the Contact Form.
